A LinkedIn Group just for mlearning/elearning.

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , , at 1:56 am by

I have set up a group within LinkedIn called “mpowered work” designed to help with collaboration, networking, discussions and articles. It will be good to get some conversations going with individuals and businesses who deal with these topics on a day to day basis.

I have noticed that are more companies coming on board with mobile devices and utilising these in the workplace in a number of fields.

The link for mpowered is: http://www.linkedin.com/e/8uxqkr-giraekrx-8/vgh/3740378/

I have set up a twitter hashtag: #mpoweredwork and have been pairing it up with #mlearning and #elearning.

iPads being used in Allied Health/Medical Fields

It seems that the medical profession is using mobile devices right from training their doctors to on the wards. Not only this, but in Australia it is being used in rural health (3G Models).

On the official Apple website, there are several examples such as using it in dentistry and rehab for patients.Apple - iPad in Business - Profiles - RehabCarehttp://www.apple.com/ipad/business/profiles/rehabcare/ This article is well worth reading to look how an entire organisation has integrated both iPhones and iPads into their workplace. This goes from both admin to the therapists that work with clients.

There are many benefits to using mobile devices (such as smart phones, tablets etc) in a medical workplace.

  1. Often there are many files/notes that need to be stored and it means that these can be accessed quickly.
  2. Current knowledge/research can be accessed from online journals- if these are in textbook form often professionals/students have to wait until the next version comes out.
  3. Being able to share drawings/diagrams with patients/medical staff can explain more efficiently the diagnosis or treatment program.
  4. Just in Time learning- sometimes the best ways to learn.
  5. Other tools include: Text to Speech (great for doctors taking notes), time management/project management tools for medical admin.
  6. Case notes can be updated to cloud computing (where things are not stored in physical servers – but in the “cloud” – such as DropBox or other web based offerings.

This is going to be an exciting blog looking at the various possibilities of mLearning in the corporate and professional learning workplace.

It is interesting that different professions are interested in using the iPad or other forms of tablets to use in their daily work life. An interesting article in the Age Newspaper from Australia demonstrates that sports clubs, lawyers and the medical profession are now using mobile devices to access data/information on a more just-in-time basis.
